Are there any restrictions for drivers of a leased car?

Generally, anyone with a valid driver’s license can drive the vehicle, but who is allowed depends on whether the contract is signed by a company or a private individual.

Here are the specific guidelines for each case:

1. For Corporate Clients (Legal Entities)

If the lease contract is signed in the name of a company, the vehicle can be driven by:

  • Authorized Employees: Any representative designated by the company, provided they hold a valid driver’s license that matches the vehicle category.

  • Business Purposes & Beyond: The company decides who is permitted to drive the vehicle as part of its internal company car policy.

2. For Private Customers (Individuals)

If you leased the car as a private individual, the vehicle can be driven by:

  • The Main Lessee: The person whose name is on the contract.

  • Pre-Agreed Drivers: Family members or other designated individuals, provided they have a valid driver’s license and have been previously agreed upon in the leasing contract.

Standard Requirements for All Drivers

No matter who is driving, to ensure that the insurance and contract remain valid, all drivers must meet these basic criteria:

  • Hold a valid driver’s license for the specific category of the car.

  • Comply with standard driving experience or age requirements if specified in your individual contract terms.

  • Follow the territorial limits specified in your insurance policy (e.g., driving outside the European Union or Baltics usually requires prior written permission from the lessor).
